How To Lose Weight By Eating More

April 10, 2009 by Kerri Stalton

It’s pretty much a universal fear of everybody who goes on a diet. They are afraid that they’re going to be hungry all the time when they’re trying to lose weight and it’s ultimately what ends up preventing them from reaching their goals. However, it really is possible to go on a diet, eat more food, and still lose weight.

Of course, it depends what you are eating more of. If you are eating more fresh vegetables and less chocolate brownies and nachos, then yes; you certainly can eat more and weigh less.

You may have seen article titles such as “Have More Food and Lose Weight,” or Eat More and Weigh Less” and thought, “Yeah, sure.” I’ve thought that because I never thought I could eat more and lose weight. But that’s because I always thought in terms of calories rather than in terms of volume of food.

A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables along with whole grains, lean protein (think seafood, poultry, beef, and pork that is not processed), and low fat dairy will allow you eat much larger amounts of food the calories than a diet that’s primarily fast food or processed foods. For example, a super sized fast food meal can easily take up nearly your entire daily allotment of calories. I’m not trying to pick on McDonalds, but my favorite meal there is a Big Mac, large French fries, and a large Coke. That meal is over 1,400 calories. Most people who are dieting and trying to lose weight don’t eat more than 1,500 to 1,800 calories a day so that meal at McDonalds would mean some pretty skimpy eating for the rest of the day if a person wanted to not go over their calorie limit for the day.

On the other hand, you could have had a whole wheat bagel with some peanut butter, yogurt, an apple, a salad, soup, popcorn, broiled fish, steamed veggies, and even a baked potato and still only consumed as many calories as you would have with the Big Mac meal.

I’m not trying to oversimplify things; but the idea of eating more and weighing less is to eat more naturally low calorie foods and to eat much less of the high calorie foods. And I’m putting the emphasis on naturally low calorie foods because processed diet foods that are low in calories aren’t necessarily nutritious or filling. Incorporating lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet is not only helpful for weight loss efforts but also healthy and good for a person’s body.

Calorie Shifting or Calorie Counting: Which One Would Help Me Lose Belly Fat Fast?

April 9, 2009 by Frances Norah Smith

While it is vital to understand the concept of calorie clearly for the purpose of successful weight loss, the different types of calorie controlling methods adopted by different dieting programs often leave us confused and bewildered! Take for example the concepts of calorie counting and calorie shifting. Both techniques would work in their own rights and lead you to weight loss success, provided that you follow the rules religiously! But of course the obvious question is: which method is easier and better? Well that is what this article would tell you!

It is indeed hard to answer this question since both calorie shifting and calorie counting have their respective strong and weak points.

1. Calorie counting-

Strong points: The main advantage of the calorie counting method is that it offers you permanent weight loss, albeit very slowly. If you are patient enough, you are sure to get good results from its use over time. Another big plus point is that it recommends exercise along with dieting for accelerating the weight loss process.

One good thing about regular exercising is that you can build strong lean muscles with their help, with in turn translates to a higher metabolic rate! When you have a strong and muscular body, coupled with high metabolism, you will be able to burn fat not only at the time of working out but also at rest! If you are wondering how your bodybuilder friend manages to keep weight away all the year round, this might be his secret!

Weak points: The obvious weak point of the calorie counting technique is that it takes a lot of patience and self-discipline on your part to follow this dieting method for your whole life! Just imagine counting the calorie contents of each and every morsel you put in your mouth, and doing this for days, weeks, months or even years, and you would get an idea of what I mean! To be honest, most of us are too accustomed to an ‘easy-going’ lifestyle to be able to keep up with this diet for long enough!

This dieting technique is extremely restrictive regarding the types of foods you are allowed to eat. Not only you are likely to get bored of eating the same old, boring foods time and again, it also makes it quite difficult for you to eat out at a fast food restaurant once in a while, because you never know how much calorie you would be putting in your mouth through the restaurant food (dont be fooled by the calorie stats mentioned in the menu cards, as they are hardly ever accurate)!

Perhaps the worst thing about this way is that it constricts your calorie intake to an abysmally low level, thereby leaving your body begging for more! If your body doesn’t get the minimum amount of calorie, it would slow down your metabolic rate and stop the fat burning process, thereby making it difficult for you to lose weight.

2. Calorie shifting- Now let’s move on to calorie shifting. It seems that more and more people are taking a liking to this method in the recent times and not without a reason!

Strong points: The first reason behind its popularity is that it offers you fast weight loss WITHOUT restricting you to a few boring foods. In fact, with this method, you can eat any type and amount of food you want subject to a certain daily calorie intake limit! The makers of the calorie shifting method of dieting believe that when your body receives foods of varying calorie contents and your daily calorie consumption differs widely, it would always keep your metabolic rate high!

As you can see, with this method, you won’t have to spend sleepless nights if ever you happen to have a fill at a fast food restaurant. This diet needs less patience on your part, and since it doesn’t recommend daily workouts, more and more people are finding it attractive!

Weak points: That said, even the calorie shifting technique is not devoid of certain weaknesses. If doing calculations is something you cringe about, then this diet may not be for you as you would need to make a lot of nitty-gritty calculations to become successful with it!

For example, you would need to calculate how frequently you should eat, how and in what degree you would be alternate between different types of foods, as well as how to alternate your meal times in a way so as to derive the optimum benefits from your diet. All these calculations are sure to leave you quite confused and frustrated!

Also, since it doesn’t recommend workouts, you are virtually limited to losing weight solely with the help of dieting, which is an awfully slow process! Further you would never be able to quit your diet because if you do, you would become overweight all over again! Here is why-

You can remain fit and slim only if your body has a decent amount of lean muscle mass, since lean muscles keep the fat away by burning excess calories all the time, whether you diet or not. However this diet doesn’t recommend you to workout and you cannot build strong lean muscles without doing regular workouts!

For that reason, even if you are lucky enough to get rid of your fat belly, it would be very difficult for you to maintain your slim body for long unless you continue dieting forever!

That said, I recommend calorie shifting in spite of its weaknesses, since it is much easier to follow and offers faster weight loss results than calorie counting. Since calorie shifting places fewer restrictions on your food intake, you don’t feel deprived at any point of time. At the same time, I would also recommend that you add a daily dose of workouts with this dieting method in order to lose weight really fast!

It doesn’t matter how old you are, when you have an embarrassing zit it is just not going to bring you happiness. The trouble is, the industry is always changing the products available to those with acne. It is hard to choose the right treatment when you go to the store one week for a product and the next it is gone. What is even worse is when the acne treatments you use contain chemicals that dry your face or do not help. The fact that there are different skin types makes it even harder to find the right acne treatment for you.

So when searching for acne remedies, where does a person turn? To cure acne many people have finally started to see that there are many benefits to using natural cures. A popular way of treating acne is the use of herbal medication. Often times, people will find themselves using three 500 milligram capsules of black currant seed oil or evening primrose oil each day.

Not every organic acne treatment will work for everyone, so you may have to keep looking if the black currant or evening primrose doesn’t help. Herbal teas can have a relaxing effect on your body, thus reducing stress. Stress as we are all aware can produce many symptoms, and acne is one of them. By choosing the right herbal teas you can get a good night’s sleep, which helps with stress. Chamomile, nettles and lavender are well known for calming the nerves, and it is possible that they will cure acne.

Chamomile or the scent of lavender has often been used to reduce stress. Both ingredients can be found in teas or fragrances. You can always try other products on your search for a natural treatment. Vitamins can sometimes help you naturally reduce your acne issues.

Vitamins, which are naturally consumed in the body, help keep you healthy. Zinc is a common natural supplement individuals use in order to reduce inflammation as well as promote healthy skin.

When you are investigating which natural vitamins to take, be sure to include chromium in the capsules. It has been shown to help control your glucose. A well rounded B complex will help your hormones stay in line, which will help in your fight against acne. What young girl or woman hasn’t experienced a monthly breakout of acne?

Natural vitamins have been shown to improve everyone’s quality of life, and using them as an acne cure is just another benefit. Using a more natural acne remedy may not have occurred to you before. The soaps, creams and lotions have been marketed to us for so many years that we may think that this is the only way to cure acne. However, this is not true. Though it may take time to find just the right balance of an organic acne treatment, you will be pleased once you do.

The key to using any organic acne remedy is consistency. It takes a combination of things to relieve the problems of acne and it won’t happen overnight, but it will happen. You need to stay hydrated with a lot of water, eat a balanced meal, and try the natural acne treatments that have been discussed. Once you have the ideal regimen, you can count on having beautiful acne free skin.

Are You Digesting What You Eat?

When I first began my search for the best nutrition and most advantageous ways to heal naturally, the saying was, Death begins in the colon. Now, with more research it is more correctly said that death begins with bad digestion. In fact the cure of disease really begins with better nutrition and more efficient ways to combine foods. Why?

We can say digestion begins in the mouth; and actually, that process starts with what the nose smells. Think of what happens when you smell turkey cooking. Your mouth begins to salivate, right? Salivary amylase in the mouth begins the breakdown of carbohydrates. That process, with carbohydrates should be completed in the small intestine.

So then, we can say digestion begins in the mouth; and actually, that process starts with what the nose smells. Think of what happens when you smell turkey cooking. Your mouth begins to salivate, right? Salivary amylase in the mouth begins the breakdown of carbohydrates. That process, with carbohydrates is completed in the small intestine.

The process of digesting proteins takes several hours and will only be confused if sugars, fats and carbohydrates like breads are in the mix. What that means is that people with poor digestion should never eat sandwiches.

This is because carbohydrates begin digesting in the mouth, not so with proteins. Chewing proteins alerts nerves in the stomach to begin creating hydrochloric acid, imperative in the digestion of proteins. When HCL is at a low, something that happens to most people as they age, then the other component in digesting proteins, pepsinogen wont work properly. HCL stimulates pepsinogen to turn into pepsin, so it is a crucial part of the digesting proteins process.

Small bits of food at a time are digested in the duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine. The pyloric sphincter, the gatekeeper between the stomach and the small intestine only allows small amounts in at a time so that the digestive juices, enzymes produced by the pancreas and the liver have time to be produced, meet in the hepatopancreatic duct and travel to the duodenum through the hepatopancreatic ampulla.

Small bits of food at a time are digested in the duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine. The pyloric sphincter, the gatekeeper between the stomach and the small intestine only allows small amounts in at a time so that the digestive juices, enzymes produced by the pancreas and the liver have ample time to be produced, meet in the hepatopancreatic duct, and then travel to the duodenum through the hepatopancreatic ampulla.

Even if medicine suppresses the body response, let’s say acid reflux which is really an alert that something is wrong and needs the owners attention, the underlying cause is still there. The underlying cause is bad digestion.

Why is all of this important to good health and the healing process? Once food begins to sit too long in any area of the GI tract it begins a process called putrefaction. This is the beginning of disease and the acid conditions in the body that cause headaches, body aches, constipation, really every other disease.

Once putrefied food stays in the system long enough, the body becomes overloaded with real debris. The immune system is overloaded trying to keep waste clean enough to store in the body.

The assimilating factor in the small intestine, which spans the many feet of the small intestine is aided by the finger-like projections called villi and micro-villi, and is slowed immeasurably when the body gets bogged down with days old undigested waste. Aging occurs at a more rapid pace after years of this abuse because the body is starving for nutrition and tired.

Once this pattern is established, once illness sets in, what should you do? What are the next steps back to health?

Be Healthy While Losing Weight

April 7, 2009 by Gary L. Condoluci, LMT
Filed under Diet

As of ten years ago, there were already over 108 million Americans battling obesity or who were overweight. The ranks of the overweight and obese have increased vastly since that time and the average US waistline has been steadily expanding for some time now. Obesity and the health problems which it causes are already a significant public health issue and by the year 2020, it is predicted to reach the level of a national health crisis.

One way to prevent this scenario is to make people aware of the risks of being overweight or obese.

The following are just a sampling of the diseases which being overweight disposes you to:

1. Heart disease 2. Stroke 3. Diabetes 4. Cancer 5. Arthritis 6. Hypertension

Losing extra weight and keeping it off prevents these diseases and can help treat them in people who have already developed them.

Many companies have taken advantage of the obesity epidemic by selling fad diet plans. These make plenty of money for their manufacturers, but do not provide a long term solution. Instead, they tend to rely on pills and supplements. Even when these diets do allow users to lose some weight, this type of rapid weight loss is not healthy; and gaining back the lost pounds in the dreaded yo-yo is even worse ” and that’s exactly what happens to most of the people who use these programs.

Better by far is a healthy weight loss plan which lets you lose those excess pounds and keep them off. The key is to set realistic weight loss goals instead of trying to lose it all in a matter of weeks. The following are some valuable tips for healthy weight loss:

1. Don’t starve yourself

Don’t diet! Repeat, don’t diet - this is the most important advice for healthy weight loss.

You may seem happy and feel that you are losing those unwanted flabs on your belly and thighs by skipping meals. But remember that this would not last long. Your body cannot tolerate having insufficient food to fuel the energy that you use up everyday.

If you get used to skipping one or two meals a day, your stored calories will be used up instead of the energy that should have been provided by your meals. So if you just eat one huge sandwich in one day, it will end up straight to your problem area (i.e. thighs, buttocks, hips).

2. Make breakfast a habit

You should listen to your mother. Eat a nutritious breakfast every day to get your metabolism going.

Your food intake after you wake up will be used to burn fat all day long.

3. Have small, frequent meals

Five small-serving snacks per day is better than three hearty meals. Eating more frequently, and in small servings, can prevent over-eating. This will also increase your metabolism and make calories burn faster.

4. Set a realistic weight loss goal

Keep your goals realistic. In the long run, it is virtually impossible for you to lose 40 pounds in 2 weeks. Have a mindset that you want to eat healthy to stay healthy for the rest of your life.

Set your goals and stick to your plan!

5. Get plenty of water

Water helps you burn fat and stay hydrated ” so get six to eight glasses every day.

6. Go easy on the sugar

Plan your meals around lots of fruits and vegetables, some bread, rice or pasta for that carbo fix that you need, plus lean meat and protein-rich foods. Sweets, sodas and pastries should be once-in-a-while indulgences only.

7. Watch your fat intake.

Fat is not the culprit to being overweight. You need dietary fat to keep your weight at the proper level.

There is such a thing as healthy fats. Olive, peanuts and canola oil have them. Tuna, salmon and mackerel have omega-3 fats which is good for the heart.

8. Get exercise regularly

Leave your car if you are only going a few blocks from home, take the stairs instead of the elevator, jog, cycle or skate. Use these activities and other home chores if you are too lazy to go to the gym and take exercise classes. Make sure that you do this regularly and you will not even notice that you are already shedding pounds with these mundane activities.

Whatever your weight loss goal happens to be, the way to get there is to set realistic goals which you know you can reach. When you reach a goal, it gives you the motivation to keep going.

Remember not to push yourself too hard. Don’t be afraid to take it easy for a day and pat yourself on the back after you meet that first goal; you’ve earned it. Of course, don’t wait too long - you’ll want to get back in the saddle and on your way towards the next goal.

Getting regular exercise, drinking plenty of water, eating a healthy diet and getting enough sleep will have you on your way to healthy weight loss and a whole new you!

Acai Berry Fact or Fiction?

A lot of material has been written and compiled for the benefits of a berry fruit, that until recently, was not known to much of the world. Being a product of Brazil, the acai berry fruit is a fruit grown in the Amazon rain-forests of South America.

Local peoples have been using the berry as a critical part of their diet for hundreds of years. As a great source of anti-oxidants, the berry has been praised for a wide variety of health benefits. This article will investigate the history of the acai berry to find out once and for all whether the claims about the fruit are real, or just a bunch of hype.

The star fruit status that the acai berry fruit has garnered over the last few years, and its increased use and adoption is because its been widely marketed as the preferred fruit for those innocent set of consumers who find themselves searching for alternatives that help age less, keep you living long and electrify the immune system against diseases and threats.

Like all beauty or anti-aging products, there are plenty of skeptics and believers when it comes to the acai berry. Many fans of the berry have seen great results in areas of weight loss and enhancing metabolism rate, however, anyone looking to drop a few pounds should know that no single pill or drink, whether its acai berry or not is not going to be a magic bullet. Any product, whether acai or not, that claims to help you shed large amounts of weight without any work should be viewed skeptically.

How To Lose Fat Fast

April 3, 2009 by Gary L. Condoluci, LMT
Filed under Diet

Other than physical appearance weight affects a person in many ways. This could be the overall quality of life, self-esteem, depression, health risks, and physical disabilities. There are a lot of positive changes once a person experiences weight loss. It is for this reason that a lot of people are searching for a weight loss technique that will surely trim down that fat and get a super slim body.

The first thing that an overweight person should do is seek a doctor to recommend the best weight loss regimen. This will be done after a full physical examination, which leads to the determination of a proper weight loss technique. And to lose weight fast and effectively four aspects of life should be changed: what to eat, how to eat, behavior and activity level.

These tips will help change your life:

Number One - To lose fat fast, you must set your mind to it, exercise and consider taking supplements. Follow a weight reduction plan that you can easily learn and follow. Spend about twenty minutes daily walking, bicycling, swimming or dancing.

Number Two - Set realistic approaches. The ability to focus and have a proper mindset enables someone on a diet to quickly lose those extra pounds. With discipline and a proper mindset, a dieter will never be discouraged and lose focus.

Number three - Listen to your body. Your body’s reaction to your quick fat loss plan will be different than someone else’s. Experiment with different plans if you have a bad reaction to a particular plan. A more rigorous exercise regimen may be more suitable for you, for instance. Or, if all you can comfortably do is walking, then that is what you should do. You want to build muscle to burn fat. This is healthier and also more attractive.

Number Four - High fiber foods should be included in your diet as these give you a feeling of fullness and, since they don’t digest as fast, you will feel full longer. Foods containing whole grains absorb fats and move them through your system quickly and they raise insulin levels. this makes you feel energized and tells your metabolism when to burn fat or when to store it.

Number Five - Keep away from fried foods especially deep-fried as this contains a great amount of fat. Although fish and chicken appear leaner than beef, this white meat can contain more fat than when beef is fried. It is recommended for those on a strict diet to opt for grilled food as this does not contain a lot of fat after the food is cooked.

Number Six - Drink plenty of liquid to keep from getting dehydrated. This will ensure your body gets rid of waste products, which is necessary for losing weight. You need to drink at least six servings of water or more daily to keep your body healthy.

Consistency and self-discipline will insure that you rapidly lose fat no matter which diet plan you choose. Sensible diet, reasonable exercises that you will enjoy doing and a good multivitamin will result in successful rapid fat loss. Going to extremes will only result in failure and a return to old habits and a return to even higher weight levels.

Fat Loss And Core Strength - Start With Trunk And Legs

March 31, 2009 by Dan Solaris

Life as we know it these days has become more complicated and this has made our list of daily ‘to dos’ longer. Indeed, the tight schedule most of us keep each day prevents us from maintaining a healthy lifestyle and this is evidenced by recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that says 66% adults in the U.S. are overweight.

The food industry’s successful production of fast gastronomic fare that more often than not fills-up our system with empty calories isn’t making things easier on our bellies either. Buckets of greasy chicken and calorie-loaded shakes are available to us round the clock and they’re taking their toll on our figures.

Since we’re living in a democracy and our government can’t really dictate what stores and restaurants serve, it’s quite obvious that the only way to curb effects of high-calorie dining is through regular exercise. Adopting a regular workout routine even for 30 minutes a day can get us in shape as well as reduce the stresses of the day.

Contrary to traditional weight loss beliefs, daily workout sessions don’t have to last for an hour or two. What’s really important is burning enough calories to create a deficit, meaning using-up more energy than we get from the food we eat each day.

Our body packs on the pounds when we regularly consume more calories than we need for our daily activities. Those ugly love handles are filled with stored energy in the form of fat tissue and the only way to get rid of it is by creating a calorie deficit each day.

Experts discovered that high intensity interval training (a combination of 2 types of cardio exercises) consume the most energy in less time. Since we also have to increase our body’s metabolism and cannot rely solely on cardio exercises for sustainable fat loss, modifying our muscle-building routines to maximize calorie-burn is also a good technique for achieving rapid fat loss.

Involving the most number of muscle groups in a workout will multiply the amount of calories used up and doing core exercises that strengthen the trunk and legs is perfect for that. When the upper and lower abs, the lumbar, oblique and leg muscles are working together, such as lifting weights while trying to balance on the uneven surface of a Bosu ball, you can bet you’re using-up way more energy than if you were on a flat surface.

There are several ways to engage our base muscles and speed-up fat-loss in our workouts. Standing on one foot, while doing curls and presses, or using a Swiss ball as a platform in abdominal exercises will result in instability. The effort made by the core muscles in keeping the body steady results in a more intense workout, a more stable base and ultimately speedier fat loss.
