It is easy to become overwhelmed by diabetes. You need to take change your diet to help manage the disease. One particular life change people with diabetes have been changing to is a vegetarian diet. It eliminates all animal foods and sugar.

Diabetes is a disease where your body cannot produce enough insulin. Insulin is what carries glucose in the blood and then to the cells to fuel them. If you have diabetes either your cells are not using the insulin correctly or the pancreas does not make enough insulin. This all causes a build up of blood sugar which can cause problems for your health.

A vegetarian diet can be different however you want to follow it. There are strict vegetarian diets or you can have a more liberal vegetarian diet that allows meat on certain occasions. Vegetarian foods are really health for the body.

Whether you extremely strict or more lenient on whole a vegetarian diet are lower in calories than an average diet. Since weight, loss is a major goal of most diabetics this is a good plan. Weight loss can reduce the cells resistance to insulin, which in turn allows them to process sugar like they are supposed to.

Two common diseases caused by diabetes are cardiovascular disease and kidney disease. They come from complications in your diet from excess fat and cholesterol. By eating a vegetarian diet you can reduce fat and cholesterol.

To conclude, the vegetarian diet is very healthy for a diabetic. It helps to maintain your weight, lower cholesterol, and increase overall health.

Simple carbs are basically sugar, and diets that are full of these sugars are exactly the type of diets that can lead to type 2 Diabetes. However, complex carbohydrates are a good choice to add to your diet because they are more difficult to digest. Therefore, your body has to work harder to process them, and that will give you a longer lasting energy source.

Protein helps your body to build more muscle mass and to burn calories at the same time. Lean proteins are a great source of energy. You should add a lot of protein to your body.

You will also want to make sure that you are keeping your diet full of fruits and vegetables. These will give you the nutrients that your body needs to stay balanced and healthy. Additionally, foods like this are great “filler foods” which help you to feel more full so that you do not feel tempted to indulge in high glucose foods that will hinder your health.

The battle against diabetes begins once you are diagnosed with the disease. If not avoided, you may need long term care from a physician to avoid getting the complications from the disease. Once diagnosed, you will be forced to make lifestyle modifications to avoid further complications from the disease. There are many diabetics who live considerably normal lives as long as they keep their blood sugar levels in check and they remain physically active.

This can cause much confusion when trying to figure out the best diet plan to lower blood sugar.

However different these diets are, they must all have some truth to it. Most of these diets claim to lower blood sugar best not through what you eat, but rather what you eliminate. Eliminating foods such as white flour, sugar, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco is a great start to lowering blood sugar, which ever diet you choose.

Although these diets claim that if you use them by the book you’ll be a much healthier person, but to optimize your diet plan, its best to use the parts that work best for you and to shed the others. Only you know how your body reacts to your diet plans and you can adjust to what works best and stop continuing what doesn’t.

The part of a diet book or doctor’s advice you should must take notice of is the list of foods not to eat. Although it may be unrealistic to not eat everything that’s listed, it helps you to keep these foods in moderation, which is very important when lowering your blood sugar.

In addition, listen to your body because it will give you signs should you take in food that lower blood sugar that it cannot tolerate.

Another thing most diets give advice on is to keep a food diary. A food diary that includes all the foods and medicines you intake and recording how you feel physically when you took those foods and meds is a great way to get a measure on how your body reacts to certain things.

Once you realize what foods react negatively to you from your food diary, you can start to eliminate those foods which are detrimental to your health. Try to seek medical advice while in the process of wedding out the hazards in your diet just to make sure you aren’t losing any other nutrients from that particular food.

Another little tidbit is to keep your blood sugar stable at all times. Keep foods readily available whether you are at home or on the go.

Remember that each person is different and one diet plan may work better for one person than it does for you. But that does not mean there isn’t a better diet plan out there for your specific needs.

Although no cure is currently available for either type 1 or type 2 diabetes the future is not quite as dismal as it seems. There are plenty of ways to manage the affects of Diabetes and a very close to normal lifestyle can be achieved.

The first steps to take when either type 1 or type 2 has been properly diagnosed is to discuss in detail with your doctor or Consultant the immediate steps you need to take to control your illness in the first instance.

Don`t forget that they are experts in their field and definitely know what they are talking about,you should pay full attention and follow their instructions fully.

Amongst other things one of the major factors will of course be your glucose levels,ie,how much glucose there is in your bloodstream and the levels of insulin to control it. Be prepared for the toil of regular blood testing which may at first seem a bit intrusive but as time goes on it will just seem like an everyday part of your life.

There are a huge variety of different apparatus for testing of the blood,indeed some of them are so good now that one would hardly notice that a sample is being taken. Not only are they very user friendly but are also extremely accurate in their findings.

Diet and Fitness will also come to the forefront following the diagnosis of Diabetes,but try not to look at this as something negative. With a well formulated diet and a good fitness regime you never know you may well end up with that body beautiful after all, see it`s not all bad is it ?.

My Experience with the Atkins Diet (part 2).

Some people have to try to make your life miserable, if you let them. It was obvious to everyone that I looked and felt better, but some people just have to try to spoil it. I was told: lots of people have died of kidney or liver failure after being on Atkins I read it in the newspaper; you will have a heart attack, it’s not natural; your cholesterol will climb sky high and you will need your toes amputated or you will have a stroke; it will affect your eyesight. All sorts of rubbish. So, I went to see my GP, who admitted that he did not know anything about the Atkins diet, but he also added that he had heard nothing bad about it either. He sent me for a series of tests at the hospital and the results were all satisfactory. He was happy that I’d lost 18 lbs and so was I. Six weeks later, I went for another cholesterol check-up, because of the high fat levels in the diet and, although my cholesterol level was up very slightly, the doctor said there was no cause for concern at all.

The Atkins diet book warns that you might develop bad breath (halitosis). I don’t know whether I did or not - no-one said anything, but I started brushing my teeth four-five times a day just in case. I guess that’s another benefit of following the Atkins diet: increased oral hygiene. It also warns of constipation. I didn’t get that either, although I didn’t give up black coffee, which has always had a laxative effect on me. But surely you can’t suffer from constipation if you’re allowed to eat well over 1lb of greens a day? I hadn’t been eating that well before the diet! So my two main concerns were nebulous.

A couple of weeks later, I was getting bored not going out so much. I was still happy with the diet, but because I am single and am used to going out and drinking beer. So, I decided to go about this scientifically. One day, after work, I drank three pints of Guinness and felt great - the taste was wonderful. Before the diet, I would have drunk five or six pints. To my surprise and delight, the next morning the ketone stick told me that I was still ‘on the diet’. Over the following weeks, I really enjoyed experimenting to find out what would ‘work’ and what would not. I discovered that even a small amount of cider would ruin the Atkins diet; some beers and some lagers were all right; red and white wine were OK. Consuming alcohol does not knock you off the Atkins diet, but it slows down your rate of progress. Even slow progress is progress, I say. Better than giving up the diet or not going out.

Don’t let people encourage you to ‘just have a little bit’. They don’t understand or don’t want to understand the trouble they’re causing you. One’s body can hold two days worth of carbohydrates: one square of chocolate, one slice of bread, a bowl of cornflakes or one sugar in your coffee will cost you TWO days to clear out of your system. Don’t let people do it to you. This is not a diet that you can stop and start when you like, in fact I think that it probably could be dangerous to keep allowing your ketone and other levels to fluctuate wildly. There are also the high fat levels in the content of the Atkins diet, which is not dangerous if you keep to it, because you body devours fat and cholesterol in the absence of carbohydrates.

That is the story so far, with me having got down to under 16 stone and keeping it there until very recently when I moved to the Far East to live. The food is so different here, but once I get used to the food and have my own house and own kitchen, I will get down to 15 stone, I’m sure I will ” without any real effort.

Anyway, thank you, Mr. Blackwell, wherever you are, you changed my life and my understanding of food and thank you, Mr. Atkins too.
