Detox diet usually claims a leaner and healthier body. The health industry is cashing in on different detoxification goods and services that guarantee weight loss and leaner body.

Fad diets are also diets that quickly become wildly popular, last for a short time, then become a footnote in popular culture. The Hollywood diet, the Atkins diet, and Jenny Craig are just three examples.

Fad diets are sometimes known as food fad-ism. This refers to any form of food that becomes popular for a short period of time. These generally have some common elements, including:

- The food is attributed with miraculous powers. - Many other foods are completely eliminated from the diet, because they are thought to have negative properties.

As an example of these elements of fad diets in the diet, take the Atkins diet. In Atkins carbohydrates must be avoided because of their negative characteristics. Low carbohydrates are extremely desirous in Atkins, because then the body enters a super fat burning condition. This diet had a number of short periods of extreme carbohydrate avoidance, followed by long periods of sustainable low carbohydrate eating. However, many people are able to continue the Atkins diet for years.

The Atkins diet was also one of these fad diets in that huge popularity was fairly short-lived. For a number of years the Atkins diet was everywhere, and everyone seemed to be following it . People from Hollywood actors to politicians were all on the Atkins diet. Although still around today, the diet is far from as popular as it was at its height.

The Atkins Grapefruit diet seeks to cash in on the popularity of the fad grapefruit diet and the less fad but still fad Atkins diet, although it has nothing to do with the Atkins estate or company. A closer look into this diet shows that it may not be all it claims to be.

It’s a challenge to find clear cut information, such as a web site, for the Atkins grapefruit diet. Hard to find information is a pretty good tip off that a con job is being perpetrated. This possible con does it’s best to make people assume it has something to do with the official Atkins diet.

Is the Atkins grapefruit diet something that was found locked away in a safe by the late Dr. Atkins? The answer is no, not only is there no mention of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet on the Atkins web site, but there is no fruit of any kind mentioned in the list of allowed foods in the Atkins diet Induction phase.

These are the foods allowed in the Atkins diet Induction phase - sorry Atkins grapefruit diet, no fruit here:

Unfortunately for the Atkins grapefruit diet, there no fruit. Grapefruit and other fruits such as fruit juices are specified in other phases of the Atkins diet. The Atkins grapefruit diet, however, relies on grapefruit to a much greater degree than would be allowed in the original Atkins diet.

The Atkins Grapefruit Diet recommends a cup of grapefruit juice or a cup of grapefruit sections, with 8 and 18 carbs respectively. Even the most generous phases of the Atkins diet, when it comes to grapefruit, recommends limiting intake to below 8 carbs per day. the two diets just don’t mesh.

A smart person would immediately peruse the Atkins web site in search of the Atkins Grapefruit diet. It starts to sound fishy when there’s no mention there.

Don’t forget the following. Any diet that relies too heavily on one food or food group is going to be unhealthy. The Atkins Grapefruit Diet is not associated with the Atkins diet, and may interfere with the results of the Atkins diet in its early phases.

What is a fad diet? It’s a well marketed diet with some outrageous scheme to lose weight in an impossible manner, often by eating nothing but one food like a cabbage.

One food or one type of food is generally overemphasized with fad quick weight loss diets. They don’t include a variety of foods or good balance, a violation of the first principle of good nutrition, eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods. If you are able to stay on such a diet for more than a few weeks, you may develop nutritional deficiencies, because no one type of food has all the nutrients a human being needs for good health. The Cabbage Soup Diet is an example. The myth of this diet is that cabbage soup is some sort of fat dissolving potion. The diet supposedly helps heart patients lose 10-17 pounds in seven days before surgery. Even if the weight loss claim were true, all the damage due to a lack of a host of important nutrients would far outweigh (pun intended) the benefits of losing the weight. Pixies, elves and fairies, or even cabbages, can’t create magical weight loss. Moderation and consuming all the major food groups is the best bet.

These crazy diets also violate a second important principle of good nutrition which is that eating should be enjoyable.. These diets are so monotonous and bland that it’s almost impossible to stay on them for long periods. Consider a week on the Cabbage Soup Diet. By Wednesday you’d dread meal time, and by Friday you’d never again want to smell a cabbage much less eat the soup. They’d carry you away in a straight jacket on Sunday.

There are many other ways fad diets aren’t good diets. Most don’t talk about exercise, such as aerobics for 30 minutes a day every day. Physical activity helps maintain weight loss, while physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. When a diet includes no need for a workout, run the other way.

Quick weight loss sounds great. It is possible. But if a program sounds too good to be true, it is.

In general there are two types of this disease - type I diabetes which is generally diagnosed in children and young adults and was previously called juvenile diabetes, and type II diabetes which is a more common form of diabetes. Type I diabetics suffer because their bodies don’t produce insulin, while Type II diabetics suffer because their cells don’t absorb insulin. A diabetic diet addresses both types, but type II can actually be avoided or reversed with the proper diet.

In general the diabetic diet is geared towards attaining ideal body weight for controlling and managing diabetes. It’s easy to calculate ideal body weight for men or women. In women add five pounds to 100 for every inch above five feet, and subtract five pounds from 100 for every inch under five feet. At 5′6″ a woman’s ideal body weight is 130. Men add 6 pounds to 106 for every inch over 5 feet tall. At 5′6″ a man’s ideal weight is 142 pounds.

The ideal formula for a diabetic diet varies, but there are some common basics. For a person with type I diabetes diet should be approximately 35 calories per kilogram of body weight per day, that’s 16 calories per pound of body weight per day. That means a 160 pound man should eat about 2500 calories per day. Type II people should lose weight by eating as little as 1500 calories daily, then refer to the type I formula to maintain ideal weight.

In a general a diabetic diet carbohydrate intake should be about 50% of the daily caloric intake. Some argue that less carbohydrates are better, but there are advantages to cutting down the fat. Sometimes this can be offset by substituting mono unsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats in the place of saturated fats.
