There are bunches of good, healthy eating facts out there and it can get incredibly confusing. Bad carbs, good carbs, protein, nutrients…It’s enough to make you want to pull your hair out.
Today, let’s step back a little from all the confusion, and talk about one of the best healthy eating facts around. Do this, and you are guaranteed to have healthy, nutritious meals that will help you lose weight (if that is what you want).
Consider this, when was the last time you ordered a pizza or went through the drive through at the local fast food place?
You know the super deluxe pizza, or the hamburger and fries are bad for you… so, why? Why did you go there?
As with anything else, there’s going to be exceptions, but I would venture to guess that most of you ordered the pizza or stopped off at the fast food place - simply because you didn’t have any idea of what to fix for dinner. And, it was simply easier to stop off and pick up a meal, rather than plan one.
That may indeed be a fact, but not one of the healthy eating facts! True, after a hard day’s work, the last thing we want to do is have to come up with an idea for a meal. It’s even worse when you throw in the healthy, lose weight restrictions. (Tossing a frozen pizza in the oven is no better than having one delivered.)
Here’s an easy solution to that problem… whenever you can set aside a couple hours - plan your dinner menu for each day in the coming week. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, go for two weeks worth of menus. If you can’t find a couple hours, schedule them. It’s worth it.
Write out each meal plan on a separate sheet of paper. Then place them all in a three ring binder. If you really want to get fancy, you could separate the days with pretty multicolored tabs. Somewhere down the line, you will probably want to laminate the pages too.
Now, here’s the important part. Each evening when you get home, open your binder to that day’s menu and make it. We want to make this a habit, so never deviate under any circumstances.
This will stop you from having to worry about what to fix for dinner and will totally eliminate those last minute impulse buys from the local fast food place.
The danger is, many of you won’t want to try this because it seems too simple. But, it works and saves a lot of money too.
If you had a personal chef, and their job was to fix you healthy, nutritious, low-calorie meals, you would expect them to preplan the menu. If they always waited until the last minute for inspiration, you would most likely fired them. Think of yourself in the same way, pre-plan your meals. Then, don’t change your plans during the week.
Once you make this a habit, you will learn to truly value and depend on that little binder.
If you plan all your meals to be healthy ones, it MUST eventually improve your health. It has to!
Now, at the end of the week, do it again! Come up with seven NEW meal plans. By the end of the first month (4 weeks), you will have 28 all different recipes that you can call on.
Every meal, for four weeks, will be different. This way you will never get tired of eating the same meals over and over again. They will all be tasty, nutritious and low calorie. Once you’ve gotten this far, you can stop your weekly planning and just continuously rotate the recipes in your binder.

Is there a best diet for losing weight? This is question on the lips (and the hips) of a whole nation and the magazines, the popular press and television bombard us with new or rehashed diets almost every day of the week. We can be forgiven for being a little confused. So what is the key to losing weight and what is the best diet to achieve this. All successful weight loss diets and programs share common features that we can identify and find the one most suitable for us.
Diets fall into several categories. Very popular over the past 15 - 20 years have been the low fat diets. The argument goes that a gram of at contains 10 calories of energy. A gram of protein contains 4 calories and a gram of carbohydrate also contains 4 calories. Therefore if we reduce our fat intake we are sure to lose weight. This is just bad application of logic. We cant just treat calories like beans to be counted and applied. This is because the body treats these three in different ways after digestion. But supposedly educated dieticians and nutritionists have been plugging this line for many years. It is not only wrong. It is also unhealthy.
Now a gram of fat contains 10 calories of energy, a gram of protein contains 4 calories and a gram of carbohydrate also contains 4 calories. Therefore if we reduce our fat intake we are sure to lose weight because we can see that fat is energy dense. When we study philosophy we find something called a a syllogism. So, the argrument goes, a cat has four legs and a dog has four legs. Therefore a cat is a dog! Dieticians used the same logic with fats, proteins and carbohydrates and it was equally false. Unfortunately it became so entrenched that no one dared to challenge the presupposition and educated dieticians and nutritionists have been plugging this line for many years. For dieting the whole concept is fatally flawed.
The mistake is that it assumes all calories are equal and the body treats all calories the same, but it doesn’t. Protein is used differently by the body from carbohydrates for example. Protein is digested into amino acids which are used to rebuild muscles and skin. Although each gram contains four calories, it does not contribute one gram to your overall body fat. Similarly fat has other functions such as to absorb vitamins and minerals. Excess fat is flushed out of the system via the liver and gall bladder. Too much fat may contribute to heart disease, loose bowel movements and greasy skin but not pounds on the hips. Excessive intake of carbohydrates is the dietary evil making people fat as I will explain later.
Food-combining diets that have been made popular by Hollywood stars is another category of diet. Hollywood stars can afford the luxury of finding the right foods and combining them to lose weight. The rest of us eat normal foods and have household budgets. The diet is based on the argument that different foods work in concert to produce unusual weight loss as they enhance each others effects. It is really questionable and no true dietician advocates them. I think they fall into the fad diet category but some swear by them.
Fad diets come in all shapes and sizes and we all recognize them when we see them. If it feels weird, it probably is. Let your common sense be your guide.
Finally we come to the popular low carbohydrate diets popularized by the Atkins Diet. Dr Robert Atkins worked on existing research of doctors who had studied the insulin response of the body to carbohydrate intake. Through the research he discovered that when we digest carbohydrates our blood sugar levels rise. The more quickly we digest carbohydrates, the quicker the rise in blood sugar. The body reacts to this rise in blood sugar by releasing insulin which binds with the blood sugar and converts it into glycogen to be stored in the liver. If the liver’s glycogen store is full the body stores it as adipose tissue, more commonly known as fat. High blood sugar is bad for the body so maintaining a steady blood sugar is vital for good health. Unfortunately when we eat highly processed carbohydrates such as sugar, our blood sugar levels spike and we overproduce insulin to correct the problem. Our blood sugar levels plummet and we are immediately hungry again. So we eat again and so the cycle perpetuates itself.
Atkins realized from the research that severely restricting carbohydrate intake would lead to the body going to its own store of energy, its stored fat reserves. So the Atkins Diet was born. Atkins also realized from research that high sugar levels in the bloodstream contributed to heart disease far more than fats in the diet. This was demonstrated in research many years before the fad that led to the low fat diet which was based on a flawed premise. For many people the Atkins Diet was a savior and they have taken on the diet as a long term lifestyle.
The Atkins diet is very effective from personal experience, but many dieters found the first month just too hard. The Atkins Diet is quite strict to begin with and for these people an alternative was needed to help them lose the weight without the strict self discipline the Atkins Diet required. They needed a diet that worked in the real world without the time and effort the Atkins Diet needed. The best diet should include food, exercise and a meal planner to help make life easier. It should not need us to carefully count every gram of carbohydrate and protein and fat that passes our lips. You see food, selected correctly can be our greatest ally in losing weight. A good weight loss program will educate as to which foods to avoid and which to include, correct portion size and eating habits.

What Exercise Is Best For Quick Weight Loss?

I hate exercise. Or at least I did, until I decided to become more efficient about losing weight. If I ever gain weight I try to lose it by being as efficient as I can. Optimizing my methods of weight loss may let me lose the same weight in two months instead of three, so why not?
Originally I began my weight loss journey by trying to go for short walks everyday. This showed some progress in my waistline but it wasn’t nearly fast enough for me, Mr. efficient. Eventually I almost quit after not getting the results I wanted.
Luckily instead of quitting I buckled down and did some real research into the calorie burn of different exercises. What I found surprised me, although it made perfect sense.
The problem was walking is not a very intense activity, in fact its about the easiest exercise you can do, and the calories you burn is all dependent on the intensity of your workout.
Walking for an hour can burn from 160 to 290 calories. To me this seemed like nothing when you compare it to the 3500 calories that makes up a pound of fat. At that snail pace it would take a month to lose just 3 pounds of fat. That was not good enough for me at all.
Different sports and exercises can burn up to 1500 calories per hour. Some you may want to consider are swimming, ice skating, cross country skiing, playing squash, running, or even jumping rope. These activities would all have to be done at a high intensity for an hour to burn the most calories.
Most people will not be in shape enough at the get go to jump in a pool and do laps for an hour straight. What you might want to try is starting out small, picking an exercise you think you will want to stick with and doing it for 5 minutes a day, then 10 minutes, then 15 minutes etc, working your way up over time. You need to keep in mind your personal fitness level and consult your doctor before you begin an exercise plan, especially if you are not in very good shape or have a lot of weight to lose.
After realizing that walking wasn’t going to get me where I wanted to go I tried swimming laps in a local pool. To begin with I would swim for a few minutes and get tired and need to take a break, but I stuck in there and eventually I was able to do laps for long enough to get the calorie burn that I craved. This finally resulted in the weight loss that I was after and I managed to lose 25 pounds of fat on top of the minor weight loss I had from walking alone.

For so many of us quick weight loss is the goal. However is it realistic to expect to achieve this either in the long term or the short term? From personal experience and the experience the answer is an unequivocal YES! but you will only get there by following some very sensible guidelines.
What is defined as quick weight loss? How many pounds do you need to lose per week to call it quick? Lets start at the beginning by asking the question How long did you spend putting on these extra pounds? If it took years to put on and your weight is substantial you must be realistic and work towards a goal weight and you have to know it wont happen overnight. Do you have a specific target in mind, like an upcoming wedding, or looking good for summer? It is quite realistic to expect to lose 2 ” 5 pounds a week and this is achievable. This is the range you should consider to be quick. Diets promising weight loss of more than this actually dont help you lose fat but water. That water will return quickly to your body even if you stay on the miracle diet. You need to lose fat, not water. So how do you do it?
One key rule is that food is your friend. You cant succeed on a very low calorie diet or a very limited range of food, unless you happen to be a rabbit or a squirrel. Food is actually your best friend in achieving quick weight loss. Most likely the diet you have followed up to now is high in sugars, processed carbohydrates and low in protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. It made you fat, and the right diet will guide you back to a healthy weight.
This was my starting point when I started looking for a good weight loss program. I looked for one that allowed me to satisfy my appetite and not starve. Any extreme diets that starves you also sets you up for failure. Its all about metabolism. Your body detects very low caloric intake as signs of a famine and it goes into survival mode, slows down you metabolism to protect its stored energy reserves and stops any fat-burning. If you have to lose 60 pounds understand that this will take 10 ” 15 weeks depending on how dedicated you are and how much you have to change your lifestyle. You didnt get fat overnight. You wont get thin overnight either. I know I didnt but I did get slimmer week by week.

I think that almost everyone says that they could stand to lose or wants to lose 10 pounds. I am definitely one of them. I can honestly say that I could lose 20 pounds and it would be welcomed. No matter how much weight you want to lose, you have to be dedicated.
Weight doesn’t just disappear. Even celebrities and plastic surgery junkies who lose the weight fast have to fight like crazy to not put it back on. To lose 10 pounds is certainly easier than losing a lot more than that, but it does take dedication and will power.
When trying to understand how to lose weight, one must only look to why they have gained weight in the first place. The majority of people gain weight due to a lack of exercise and/or from eating too much unhealthy food.
If have a heavy work schedule that doesn’t allow for much exercise time, this doesn’t mean you have to scrap exercise altogether. 30 minutes a day is not asking much for exercise and it’ll drastically change the way to feel in a good way.
A neighbor of mine and I walk 3 times a week. During the summer months when it is simply too hot, we might not make 3 walks, but we try to remain dedicated. If you can start to take short walks, or long ones, as many times a week as possible, you might start to lose 10 pounds faster than you imagined you could.
Someone once told me that if I want to lose weight, just close my mouth. While that sounded a bit insulting at first, I realized that it just meant that I need to stop eating so much. I have a habit of eating when I’m bored, or when I’m feeling down and out.
Taking junk food out of your diet is a great way to gain more energy and to lose that weight. In between meals, choose a healthy snack such as fruit to help satisfy your hunger. A little bit of exercise and a change of snacks is a great way to start your new lifestyle.
Instead of potato chips, I found low-fat pretzels. I gave up the morning donuts and Tastykakes and settled for a banana and animal crackers. Sure, they aren’t as yummy but I know that it will help me lose 10 pounds much faster than stuffing my face with junk food. In fact, to lose 10 pounds may be incredibly fast for some people.
Before a meal in order to help you eat less, drink a full glass of water and eat maybe half a banana about 20 minutes before your main meal. This helps you to eat less and therefore not in take all those unnecessary calories.
By doing these tips of walking at least 3 times a week and cutting down on unhealthy food you’ll be able to maintain your lifestyle without a radical change and lose the weight you imagined and see the results in reality.
