Atkins Dieting (part 1).

When I first came across an Atkins Diet book, I was working in an office in south Wales. I had been working there for five or six years and had accumulated quite a bit of excess weight. I had never enjoyed participating in sport, but my previous job had been working on building sites, which entailed a certain amount of physical activity ” just enough to keep me in reasonable shape. After five years as office-wallah, I weighed 18 stone 12 pounds (264 lbs or 120 kg), three stones more than before and neither I nor my physician were happy about it.

One day a representative of some legal or accounting firm came in for an appointment, and, while we were awaiting the other directors, we got to talking about office life and its tendency to make one put on weight. He said that he had had the same problem before his new, more mobile, job, but that now he made sure he got out of the office regularly and walked everywhere he could if he had the time. He also said that he’d read a good book on dieting while on holiday in the USA and that he would send me a copy. I didn’t think anything more of it and never saw the man again. I think his name was Mr. Blackwell.

The book arrived as promised, but I left it lying on my desk unread for months and months, until one day, I had a dentist’s appointment and had forgotten to take a book to work to read while I was waiting ” something I always did/do because the magazines are always so old and boring. Anyway, I read 50-60 pages that day and I was mesmerised. I had never been on a proper diet before and I thought I should give it a a go. I had stopped eating pastry, cakes and chocolate months ago, but it hadn’t had much effect and my weight was still on the increase, albeit more slowly.

It occurred to me that the Atkins diet was a ‘thinking person’s’ diet There is a vast amount of scope for individual tastes and lifestyles and the usual problem of self-discipline did not seem to be much of a problem because for that reason. The book warned of addictions and fads and how best to overcome or prevent them. These did not seem to be an issue for me either - I liked coffee, but could take it or leave it and I had already given up chocolate. I knew that maybe beer and bread would be my biggest problem.

The only requirement in the seven-fourteen day induction phase is to eat not more than 20 gram of carbohydrate per day. The book has a clear list of almost every foodstuff and their carbohydrate content. I found it really very easy. In fact, I was eating in a more healthy way in the induction stage than I had been eating before it! I bought a carton of Ketone sticks from the local chemist to make sure that the Atkins Diet was working and I found that I was in ketosis on the third day. It was very gratifying to know that I would be slimming down whatever I did and wherever I was all day long from now on.

I gave up bread (and Guinness!) for a fortnight and felt great. I actually felt ’springy’ or ‘bouncy’ like a boxer in the ring before a fight. I had no trouble whatsoever staying within the 20 gram limit, although I did miss fruit more than I’d expected or some fruits anyway. But I found ways to make up for everything. There are many, many recipes and recommendations in the book so I won’t go into them here, but I started eating breakfast before I went to work and dinner in the evenings. I really took great care and attention over preparing lunch for work the next day, usually consisting of a salad, some cheese and various nuts to snack on. You can eat a few strawberries too. In the evening, I would cook up something like a curry (no flour) eating it with green beans instead of rice; or a traditional British meal without potatoes followed by cheese and strawberries and cream. I lost 18 pounds in two weeks and felt really great.

Weight Loss Program that Fits Your Fast-Paced Lifestyle

Other than physical appearance weight affects a person in many ways. This could be the overall quality of life, self-esteem, depression, health risks, and physical incapabilities. There are a lot of positive changes once a person experience weight loss. It is for this reason why a lot of people are searching for a weight loss technique that will surely trim down those fats and get a super slim head turner body.

Seeking a doctors recommendation for the best weight loss program is the first thing that any overweight person should do. The doctor should require the person to have full physical examination to determine the proper weight loss technique. At least four aspects of life should be changed to lose weight fast and effectively: type of food eaten, eating habits, activity level, and behavior or attitude.

Here are the top 6 weight loss tips that you can use in your program:

First: Quick weight loss program is composed of a complex technique that includes state of mind, workout, and diet supplements. Start by researching for a diet food plan one could easily fit into. Integrate a workout plan that includes at least fifteen minutes of extensive activity a day like running, brisk walking, dancing, or swimming.

Second: It is important that you set weight loss goals that are feasible and possible to achieve. This will not only help you focus on your exercise program but will enable you to have the proper mindset to lose weight fast and quick. With this, the normal dieter will never be discouraged when going through his or her weight loss program.

Third: Listen as the body speaks. Each and everyone’s body metabolism reacts differently to different fast weight loss programs and plans. Try substituting one program for another to compensate the body’s reaction. Exercise program must be suitable to one’s body, as others are not able to exercise as rigorously as others can. If walking is all that can be done, then walk for this is proven the best exercise. Muscles burn more calories than fats so it’s also best to put on a little muscle and looking good too.

Fourth: Eat one serving of whole grain bread to move fat faster through the digestive system. Eating fibers slows down the digestion process and makes a person feel fullness sooner. Grains turn to blood sugar when digested. This impales the insulin level of the body telling it to stop burning fats or start storing it. The body is energized as a result

Fifth: Try to avoid eating food types that are fried, deep fried, and contain a lot of fat. For example, chicken and seafood are leaner than beef, but they contain more fat as compared to fried beef. It is also recommended that you eat grilled food since there is not that much fat when food is cooked this way.

Sixth: Always remember to drink a lot of liquids when undergoing a weight loss program. 8 glasses of water a day always works best when replenishing the body of the toxins and unhealthy substances. This is also because weight loss depends on how much waste the body can eliminate, so in order to do that it has to be kept hydrated.

In the end, the most important values that weight loss depends greatly on are discipline and consistency. Even if you have a light weight loss program that consists of light dieting and workouts, you’ll be able to lose weight fast as compared to undergoing a very rigorous weight loss and exercise program that might just bring you back to square one.

Three Day Diet - Is It Rational?

February 12, 2009 by Dwain Shramek

In 1985 the famed three day diet first came on the scene. It boasted creation of a ’specific metabolic reaction’ to cause quick weight loss and the system to be cleansed. This reaction has never been proven or even attempted to be explained. The diet is to be followed for only 3 days, with an off period of generally 5 days in between diet times. All the versions of this diet share in common specific steps that must be followed and foods that must be eaten in order for the diet to work. What better way to blame the dieter when it doesn’t work than ‘you botched the formula’.

First day breakfast includes coffee (no sugar), one half a grapefruit, and a piece of toast with 1 Tbsp peanut butter. For lunch, you are allowed a can of tuna, a piece of toast, and black coffee. Dinner consists of 3 ounces of chicken or lean meat, a cup of green beans, one cup of carrots, one apple, and one cup of regular vanilla ice cream. The following two days of the diet are pretty similar in meal quantity, though the specifics change, for example Day 2 recommends two beef franks for dinner in place of three ounces of lean meat. The diet claims that weight loss of 10 pounds is achievable over the 3 days that the diet lasts.

Hogwash is the answer. The question is what is a specific reaction to that claim? As stated the metabolic reaction has never been examined much less proven. Any weight loss would be mostly water loss due to a lack of carbs which help the body retain water. That could lead to dehydration.

Because of binge eating after such starvation and because most of the weight lost is from water, the weight will quickly return after the three days. Deprive the body of water for three day cycles enough times and a person could develop kidney damage, dehydration, or a host of other dangerous conditions.

The 3 day diet is best treated as a no day diet. In other words, don’t do it.

The Rules to Lose Weight Fast Successfully

February 10, 2009 by Lyle Neander

Rule #1: Take responsibility.

Until we own the problem we can’t fix the problem. We are fat because of our actions in the past, both through dietary and exercise habits. And we need to then realize that if we made ourselves the way we are, we can unmake ourselves and create a new future for ourselves. This might be the most empowering thing you read today. The power to change is in your hands and no one else’s. If you want rapid weight loss, you and you alone are in charge. To fix the problem you have to replace bad habits with good habits. Get up 45 minutes earlier each day and go for a brisk walk, and I mean brisk, not an amble. Get the heart pumping and the circulation working. To start with this is as much as you can probably do if your lifestyle has been very sedentary. With time add interval training, swimming or whatever sport you enjoy. Just move it!

Now you can start burning calories and start losing fat. Exercise acts in a two fold manner. Firstly it burns up calories and calories equals fat. Secondly it releases endorphins into the body which act as appetite suppressants and you actually eat less and feel fuller.

Rule #2: Find or create a support group.

The old saw - “A problem shared is a problem halved” is actually true. If you hook up with like-minded people who are on the same journey as you are, you can encourage each other and increase the effectiveness of your actions. When you are feeling discouraged a support group can help you feel better about yourself and motivate you to reach higher. I would go so far as to say that without a support group your odds of success in achieving rapid weight loss are almost zero.

Rule #3: Give toxicity the flick

If a support group can build you up, guess what a bunch of negative Nellie’s can do? They can undermine your best efforts, put temptations in your way (”It’s just one donut”, they’ll tell you), they will share their “true” stories about their failures and how you are just wasting your time. Meanwhile they are growing fatter by the day.

You owe it to yourself after all. It’s not them who are going to get heart disease or diabetes if they don’t lose weight. It’s you! So stand up for yourself. Get tough and take responsibility for your actions. Tell them you’re not interested.

Clean up your kitchen and your family if you need to. Dump the junk food. If it’s not there, you won’t be tempted to eat it. No more chips, soda, candy, or processed foods of any kind. Get rid of it! You’re not a super saint so remove temptation. Get a program that focuses on the right foods, especially foods that help you burn fat. Good foods burn fat. Bad ones build fat. Find out the difference.

Rule #4: Perseverance.

Remember - “It’s always too early to quit”. Too many folks give up just before they succeed. You’ve got to force yourself to keep going. That’s what separates the winners from the folks who never manage to lose their fat. The most important muscle you can develop at this time is called Determination.

Like all muscles it needs exercise to grow, but use it and watch your life transform. Winners never quit, and quitters never win. Your waist line will tell everyone which one you are. Thin, healthy, attractive, long life or fat, slow, unhealthy and headed for an early grave. Which do you want you be?

Start a diary on Day 1 with body measurements and not just weight. You need to know your waist has just shrunk two inches even if your weight is the same. Muscle is heavier than fat, so measuring yourself weekly will tell of your true progress, not a misleading weight-only approach. Without measuring yourself no way to know how well you’re doing with your fitness goals unless you are measuring the results. So make a note of how far you could walk when you started your program, how long it took etc. Track your progress.

Review your workouts and diet frequently to identify what is working. That way, you can always come back to successful programs in the future when you are struggling.

Set Of Easy-To-Follow Rules - Free Fast Weight Loss Diets

February 7, 2009 by Dwain Shramek

The quickest way to lose weight is through diet and exercise, period. That means taking in fewer calories than you utilize. There’s no need to starve, and in fact periods of starvation such as missing a meal could lead to more weight gain when the body enters ’starvation’ mode, not to mention starving yourself could cause tremendous damage to your body. Like so many other things slow and steady wins the race. In the long run a smart every day diet combined with good exercise is the quickest way to lose weight. That’s without the yo-yo effect of many fad diets.

Diet doesn’t mean a diet, a short term alteration of regular eating habits. Diet means the everyday, day after day, for all the days of your life way that you eat. A good diet includes foods from every one of the food groups, taken in moderation and the right amounts. And with a well balanced diet it’s easy to adjust calories down when you need to lose a few pounds temporarily.

Sounds like a big change, huh? It might not be. You may already eat most of the foods needed for a well balanced diet, just not in the right portions. Cut down quantities, replace starches with whole grains, and you can still even eat cake while losing weight.

The key to maintaining a healthy diet is planning. When you fail to plan you miss meals, that leads to binge eating. When you fail to plan you often find yourself at the mercy of a fast food restaurant or a friend whose menu leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to healthy foods. Plan meals in advance, including for occasions like parties and social gatherings.

It only takes a few questions to find out what’s on the menu and plan the days other meals accordingly to not ruin your diet. Part of the plan is understanding that sometimes the plan will fail. Don’t let a failure discourage you. One cheated meal doesn’t mean the whole diet, remember it’s an every day forever diet not just a few days diet, has failed.

Seven days a week exercise for at least 30 minutes. Little things like parking further from the office can add extra activity that makes a huge difference.

Combine the healthy every day diet with physical activity for the quickest way to lose weight.

Are Rapid Weight Loss Diets Of Any Use?

February 5, 2009 by Dwain Shramek

The amazing miracle weight loss system that can make you lose 10 pounds in 10 days no matter what you eat! Eat as much as you want, eat more than you want, eat double what you want, and still lose weight with no exercise! Drop one pant size in a day, but beware because this might work so well you’ll pop out of reality! If these advertising claims are true then rapid weight loss is a miracle reality of the modern world, requiring no effort on the dieter’s part.

Baloney! But even though they mostly aren’t true, Americans pay over 40 billion dollars a year on pills, programs and weight loss products that simply don’t work. Failure doesn’t stop new diets from springing up out of the wood work, or people from trying them. Remember Joe Frazier’s diet, chew the food but spit it out? He claimed it made him full and gave him all the nutrients without the fat.

See, mimes had the secret to weight loss all the time. Then we have the pills, creams, drinks and formulas that miraculously remove weight. Remember Fen-Fen? The people who contracted heart conditions sure do.

Studies show that Very Low Calorie Diets, or VLCDs, work. People got wind of this and now try them at home. That’s a problem because of their nature. When people are so much overweight it becomes a health problem, VLCDs were made to come to the rescue. These diets often include eating half or less of their daily caloric intake. They’re intended to be implemented in medically supervised closed settings, where people can’t cheat. When used outside of a closed setting, often a clinic called a ‘fat farm’, these diets can be dangerous to the dieters health and will generally not work because of binge eating after a period of partial starvation.

Rapid weight loss causes a number of health problems. Painful gallstones develop in up to 25% of people who lose large amounts of weight over a few months. Uneducated dieters can often become dehydrated because they don’t realize a large portion of the water people need to drink comes from foods. It’s easy to compensate for this by drinking more water. Malnutrition can develop from not eating enough protein over a long period of time. The body can even become unable to process protein, which leads to serious illness and even death.

Rapid weight loss is a great idea. But it’s not for most people, and should be administered and supervised by qualified medical professionals.
